Welcome

city-nashvilleSGMP is a nonprofit professional organization of persons involved in planning government meetings, either on a full or part-time basis, and those individuals who supply services to government planners. Our objectives are to improve the quality and promote the cost effectiveness of government meetings by improving the knowledge and expertise of individuals in the planning and management of government meetings through education, training, and industry relationships.

To be affiliated with a professional trade association is even more important today than ever before. This stands true for the government planner as well as the suppliers who make up hotels, CVB’s and other related industry services.

The Tennessee Chapter of SGMP offers monthly educational opportunities, as well as national, regional and chapter education conferences to its members. SGMP is the only national organization dedicated exclusively to improving the knowledge and expertise of individuals in the planning and management of government meetings through education, training, and industry relationships, and to improve the quality and increase the cost effectiveness of government meetings.

Monthly “working lunch” meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month, and are currently being held in the Nashville, Tennessee area. Planners interested in enhancing their skills by learning the latest techniques for planning successful meetings, suppliers working in the government market and those interested in further their interests through networking opportunities should plan to attend. A full meeting and event calendar is available on this website.

Membership is available to full or part time employees of federal, state, county, and city governments. Associations of governmental employees, government agencies, and those who supply services to government planners are also eligible for membership. Suppliers applying for membership are required to join with an eligible government or contract planner. However, planners can join independently at any time. SGMP is a nonprofit professional organization, and is managed by a national board of directors and officers elected by the membership, and an Executive Director. For more information about SGMP as an organization, visit the national web site at www.sgmp.org.

SGMP is a nonprofit professional organization of persons involved in planning government meetings, either on a full or part-time basis, and those individuals who supply services to government planners. Our objectives are to improve the quality and promote the cost effectiveness of government meetings by improving the knowledge and expertise of individuals in the planning and management of government meetings through education, training, and industry relationships.

Represented in SGMP's membership are employees of federal, state, county and city government, as well as associations of governmental employees and government agencies. The Society of Government Meeting Professionals is the only national organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to improving the knowledge and expertise of individuals in the planning and execution of government meetings through education, training, and industry relationships.

Government agencies spend over $1.02 billion annually on training and such related costs as travel expenses, hotel rooms, and food and beverage charges. Individuals who plan and administer these efforts often have no training or educational experience in meeting planning.

Established in 1981, SGMP has grown to over 4,000 members in over 31 chapters across the United States. In each chapter, half of the members are government or contract meeting planners and half are "suppliers" representing hotels and others who provide services to planners.

Code of Ethics

Code of Ethics

Because we recognize that government planners and the hospitality industry are companions functions within the meeting planning fields, and

Because sound cost-effective transactions must be mutually profitable, and

Because cooperation between government meeting planners and suppliers will reduce the cost of meetings with consequent benefits to the hospitality industry and to the national economy as a whole,

We, therefore, subscribe to the following standards of professionalism in the relationship between government meeting planners and suppliers and within the industry as a whole.

  • To avoid misrepresentation in all business dealings, recognizing that permanent business relations on a professional level can be maintained only on a basis of honesty and fairness.
  • To buy and sell on the basis of value, recognizing that value represents that combination of quality of service and price which assures the greatest ultimate economy to the user.
  • To respect obligations incurred that neither express nor imply a performance which you cannot reasonably expect to fulfill.
  • To adjust and settle disputes on the basis of facts and fairness only.
  • To recognize that character is the greatest asset in commerce and to give it consideration in all business transactions for the betterment of the profession.
  • To avoid statements tending to injure or discredit and to divulge no information acquired in confidence with the intent of giving or receiving an unfair advantage in a competitive business transaction.
  • To provide, accept or demand no gifts or entertainment, under the guise of sales expense, where the intent or effect is to unduly influence the recipients in favor of the donor, and to renounce all forms of commercial bribery.
  • To strive constantly for education and growth of knowledge within the profession.
  • To counsel or mentor — and to accept counsel from colleagues — whenever the occasion permits, for the advancement of the profession and the Society.
  • To not use the Society, or allow the Society to be used, for overt commercial or personal purpose
